All my children have attended preschool at United Children and Family Head Start. My oldest is 12 and my youngest is in his last year of preschool. He’ll go to Dove Academy next year with his siblings. He’s excited. He says, “It’s the big people’s school!”
I’ve always been a parent volunteer. My youngest son is busy. His teacher let me pop in whenever I could. So I always tried to come in for nap time, which was when he had a hard time. I would sit with him and sing him to sleep. The other kids noticed and asked me to sing to them too. The teacher told me some of those kids had never napped at school before!
At this point in my life, I had long given up on college. Now my dreams now are for my kids to go to college. I’m focused on what I need to do to get them where I didn’t go. When United Children and Family offered me the chance to sign up for the CDA (Child Development Associate) training, it gave me pause. The teachers really encouraged me that this was something I could do.
I’m ecstatic. I’m a college student! I told my kids that I’m going to school. I just thank United Children and Family so much for giving me this opportunity to do something that I just didn’t see myself doing.
I’m a field manager for a fast food chain, so I go from store to store. I’m getting older, running around all day is not for me anymore. Once my coursework is over in December, I’ll be able to volunteer more to get my classroom hours toward completing my CDA certification.
Now, I have a chance to go back to school and then eventually work in a classroom, which I love.
