“I learned about Early Head Start while I was pregnant with Isaiah. I came over to see the center, meet a few teachers and decide if I was going to put him on the waiting list. We did that, and he started here at Matrix Head Start when he was 6 months old.
While I was pregnant, our parent educator came out to the house. She told me more about the program and helped with resources, information and networking. It’s definitely family-oriented. They help not only the child enrolled in the program, but offer support for the whole family.
It was important to me to get back to work. It had been 16 years since my daughter, Jasmyne, was this young. It was an adjustment. I wanted to make sure Isaiah was in a good place while I was at work.
It was uncomfortable at first. I thought, “I don’t know these people and I’m going to leave my baby here?” I got to know the teachers and staff though. Now I’m very comfortable with him being here.
Knowing I have support helps big time. We have a weekly appointment with our parent educator to check on us, make sure everything is going good. “Do you need networking? An extra push?” The parent meetings are helpful as well. I get to meet other parents and see I’m not the only one going through this. Help is right here, if you want it.”
