“I work here at Focus:HOPE, so I see a lot of things that they’re doing with the Early Head Start program. When my daughter got pregnant, I thought it would be a good start for her to get some knowledge about being pregnant and everything that comes with it. Any time you can start early on gaining knowledge and learning, it’s always a benefit. It’s better to start early.
She’s just 19, so being involved in the doula program is kind of comforting to her. Everybody I meet at the Center for Children is always respectful, always courteous. They are actually concerned about my daughter’s well-being and that she understands what her body is doing. The knowledge and experience that they are giving her, all of that is memorable.
With her being a new young mother, she really doesn’t know a lot. When Miss Ernestine, her doula, talks with her, it made my daughter feel a little bit better, maybe a little bit calmer. Knowing what to expect will help her actually know what to do. She won’t be frazzled and unnerved. If she does have any problems, she can always call Miss Ernestine. And it doesn’t stop when she has the baby. There is still a support system for her here.
My daughter lives with me so I’m going to help her raise the baby, and it’s going to be real special. Grandparents need to know as much as they can, especially during this time and age when a lot of things can change. There are a lot of things you don’t know, so you just need to get on board and be knowledgeable.”
