“Head Start is such an important learning opportunity for kids. There’s so much they can learn from coming to school everyday — from being with friends, becoming independent little people, to learning about science and math. Yes! They can learn about science and math.
It’s incredible to watch them grow and learn, and then make a successful transition into kindergarten. They don’t have to wonder what to do in a classroom because Head Start has helped them get ready.
Head Start supports not just the child, but the whole family. That’s where I come in as a family service worker at the Southwest Solutions Voyageur Academy Head Start. We try to help families with whatever support they may need in becoming more self-sufficient. Head Start helps the family with employment, job training, health care, transportation, utilities, and even rental assistance.
My son Malik went to Head Start when he was 4. Now, he’s 18. I volunteered in his class and was hired as a teacher’s assistant. Since then, I got my associate’s degree in child development and bachelor’s in human services. I’m in school now for educational leadership to help my work with families and schools.
I’ve been in the field for a long time! I love working with children and families, and seeing them grow with Head Start.”
