“I took a child development class in college, and it sparked my interest. Later when I had the chance to join Matrix Head Start as a parent educator, I took it.
Early childhood is the perfect time in a child’s life to promote school readiness. What’s great about Head Start though is that it’s not only for children, it’s also for parents. That’s where I come in as a parent educator.
At Matrix Head Start, we use our ASPIRE Matrix model to help families become self-sufficient. We talk with parents about their strengths and areas where they need help. We support families with everything from childcare and parenting skills, employment, income, housing, transportation and health care.
Parent educators sit one-on-one with parents twice a month. We set goals with parents around what the family needs. Then we work together on those goals.
ASPIRE Matrix lets parent educators be flexible in supporting our families. We can meet in their homes, in the community or at the Head Start center. A lot of our families work multiple jobs, so we meet after hours if we need to. Transportation is often a barrier, so parent educators can go out and get resources for parents. We have partnerships with other social service agencies so that we can better support the families that we serve.
Watching the huge progress parents make for their families throughout the year is the best part of my job.”
